ANTIQUE Highly Enameled WOOD JEWELRY / TRINKET BOX WATER LILY Design INLAID MOP

Description

We love to keep our treasures in all sorts of boxes, but sometimes the boxes themselves are the treasures!! This beauty is unmarked as to manufacturer or exact origin but some basic intuition helps!  The wood body is HIGHLY ENAMELED creating an amazing SHEEN often seen on Japanese pieces.  The motif of WATER LILIES and WILD GRASSES surrounded by florals also has an Asian feel.  The centers of the silver and gold flowers on the lid are slightly embossed and in the opposite color of the flower....gold on silver....silver on gold.  One of the flowers is INLAID MOTHER OF PEARL (center of right side of lid...Photo #1 & #2).  The rounded / scalloped shape of the lid with the raised sides and center adds to the magnificent design here!  And no part of the box was left undecorated with the lovely orange flowers / leaves appearing front, sides and back!!  There is a tiny lock mechanism on the front but no key is present.  Top and bottom edges show some normal wear with interior also highly enameled in black.  The hinges open nicely.  The right-hand hinge was repaired a bit by the previous owner (Photo #10) which requires the lid to be nudged a teeny bit to the left....it then closes perfectly.  With a little finesse you could probably do a better job!! The reverse holds a tiny paper label that reads "50".  Box measures 7" horizontally, 6" vertically with a height of  2 1/8".  What a charming accessory for a den, library or vanity!!
