Description
This is a rareSendai Isho-dansu
or clothing chest from the mid to late 1800's made in the northern Tohoku city of Sendai. Used for keeping precious kimono secure this tansu has a total of 9 drawers. It is made throughout of solid
Sugi
wood (cryptomeria). The hardware and
in particular the
lock plates of the Sendai tansu make them very highly regarded all over Japan for the quality workmanship and intricate details.
The
ishodansu
or kimono chest was a special piece used to store one's most valued kimono as well as money, documents and other precious items.
There are numerous lock plates but the locks have over time become inoperable and no key is necessary and no risk of getting locked out.
This tansu chest is made of solid
Sugi
wood, a type of Japanese cedar, and finished in the original rich red lacquer. All the hardware is hand forged iron in a curved
Kakute
(square) shape with the burnt lacquer finish
.
This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina
.
It remains in
fine antique condition
and should serve one well for another century or more of use.
It measures 46.5" wide by 34.5" high by 17" deep (118 x 87.5 x 43 cm) plus a bit more for the hardware. A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
very solid and functional
piece of furniture.
The nine drawers are of various sizes and move easily without binding. The inside dimensions of top drawer is approximately 44" wide by 15.5" deep by 5.25" tall (111.5 x 39.5 x 13.5 cm), the three larger drawers are 32" wide by 6.5" tall (81 x 16.5 cm) and the smaller drawers above and below the safe are about 10.5" wide by 5.25" tall (26.5 x 13 cm).
