Description
This is an antique Japanese tansu known as aChoba-dansu
or document chest, this tansu was made at the end of the Meiji period (c. 1900). It has 6 drawers, 2 compartments with sliding doors and 1 with a lift out door. It is made from solid
sugi
wood (cryptomeria) for the face, interior and case.
The
chobadansu
was a special piece of portable furniture used to store document, accounts, money and other valuables for a business enterprise
.
This tansu
is made with pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction. It has all its 120 year old
rich patina
with a clear
shunkei
type lacquer finish. All drawers and doors move easily without binding. The sliding doors lift out easily for open display. All hardware is hand forged iron and bronze with
gumpai
handles. Highly decorated hikite pulls are
inset into each slider and feature an image of Mt Fuji
.
It measures just over 34" wide and 46 1/4" high by 16 3/4" deep (117.5 x 86.5 x 42.5 cm). A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and
very solid and functional
piece of furniture.
It remains in
very fine condition
and should serve one well for another century of use.

The five drawers are in three sizes and move easily without binding. The inside dimensions of the smallest drawer is 6 3/8 wide by 13 3/4" deep by 2 1/2" tall (16 x 35 x 6.5 cm), the three middle drawers are approximately 8 1/4" wide by 14 1/4" deep by 3 3/4" tall (21 x 36 x 9.5 cm), the largest bottom drawers are both 13 3/4" wide by 14 1/4" deep by 6 1/2" tall (35 x 36 x 17 cm). The top compartment has a 9 1/2" vertical clearance.
