    Description

    Antique Japanese Lacquer Box Gold and Silver Inlay Jukogo Meiji Era circa 1900
    A SMALL THREE TIERED LACQUER BOX, JUKOGO
    Meiji era (1868-1912)/ possibly Taisho era (1912-1926)
    The rectangular three-tiered box decorated on the top and sides with aoi mon on a field of sprinkled gold nashiji and fitted with ring clasps on the bottom section, the interior a roiro ground embellished with sprinkled nashiji, with tomobako. The symbols of the aoi mon are used throughout.
    The design is of a aoi - commonly called the hollyhock, or birthwort, or wild ginger. The three leaf like motif was the crest for the Tokugawa Shogun family, which reigned over Japan from the 17th through the 19th Century.  This box comes with the original wood box with Japanese labels on it, as well as a red silk rope to tie them together, and a cream colored silk wrapping.
