Description
Up for bidding is thisSTERLING SILVER/GOLD PENDANT DEPICTING PLAQUE AGAINST THE EVIL EYE,
5th CENTURY C.E.
This replica is made by Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
The original limestone, plaque, carved in a gabled architectural design and bearing typical Jewish symbols, represents a wall in a synagogue.
The main element of the composition is the imposing central door or niche flanked by two lateral doorways in front of which stand two large menorahs. Window-like openings are cut out above the niche and in the door behind the menorahs; there is a suspension hole at the top of the gable.
The circular hollow within the niche, as well as the three semicircular hollows on the wall above, were originally inlaid with mirrors.
The base of the plaque is decorated with a frieze of three birds, an example of the fairly common use of animal decoration in Jewish religious art.
Material: sterling silver 925 and 14 kt gold (the circular hollow within the niche in the center of the pendant)
Size: 2 cm x 3.3 cm (3/4" x 1 1/4")
